  1. Chinese politician, member of the Chinese
  2. Communist Party (CCP) Politburo from 1956. He
  3. fell from favour during the 1966-69 Cultural
  4. Revolution, but was rehabilitated as finance
  5. minister 1973, supporting cautious economic
  6. reform. He was state president 1983-88. Li,
  7. born into a poor peasant family in Hubei
  8. province, joined the CCP 1927 and served as a
  9. political commissar during the Long March of
  10. 1934-36. During the 1950s and early 1960s Li
  11. was vice premier to the State Council and
  12. minister for finance and was inducted into
  13. the CCP Politburo and secretariat in 1956 and
  14. 1958 respectively. He retains a seat on the
  15. Politburo's standing committee and chairs the
  16. Chinese People's Political Consultative
  17. Conference.
